The Ireland's Hidden Heartlands

Ballyfin · Co. Laois

A Regency mansion, a five-star hotel, and not much else. Exactly as intended.

Ballyfin is a small village in the Slieve Bloom foothills, about 10 kilometres west of Portlaoise. It is not a destination for a night out. It is a destination for a night in—and it will cost you.

The entire village, architecturally and economically, orbits one thing: Ballyfin Demesne, a Regency-era mansion converted into a 33-room hotel. The house was designed by Richard and William Vitruvius Morrison in 1822 for the Coote family. For two centuries it was a private estate. In recent years it became one of the most acclaimed luxury hotels in the world.

If you are staying there, the village is redundant—the estate is self-contained, with dining, walks, and activities on the grounds. If you are not, the village is a passing moment on the way to somewhere else. There are no pubs, no restaurants, no shops. There is an architectural gem and the mountains it sits in. That might be enough.

Stories & lore.

The reason to come back. The things every local will eventually tell you about, usually after the second pint.

Built for another age

The mansion

Richard Morrison and his son William Vitruvius Morrison designed Ballyfin House in 1822 for Sir Charles Coote, 9th Baronet. The neo-classical mansion was built to last. It did. Two centuries later it remains one of the finest houses in Ireland, now operating as a luxury hotel.

Michelin, 2025

One star

The restaurant at Ballyfin earned a Michelin star in February 2025, adding to the hotel's three Michelin Keys (the highest hotel distinction). The kitchen focuses on seasonal, local Irish produce.

What to skip.

Honestly? Don't bother.

If a local was sitting beside you, this is the bit where they'd lean in.

Showing up without a room booked

There is nowhere else to stay. Plan ahead.

×
Visiting Ballyfin House as a day trip

You can tour the grounds—walks are possible from nearby roads—but the estate is gated. The experience is for guests only.
