Galmoy is a small village that straddles the border between Laois and Kilkenny. It is known locally for its mining history — a zinc and lead mine operated in the area for many years. The mine is no longer in operation.
Today Galmoy is a quiet, rural village. There are one or two pubs, a church, and the usual quiet hum of agricultural land. It is not a tourist spot. It is a place where the border is less important than the village itself.
None of these are themed Irish pubs, because they don't need to be. A few that earn the trip:
The centre of the village. Open most days.
There is no bad time. There are different times.
Quiet, the fields are green.
Good for a rural walk.
The countryside is at its best.
Cold, quiet, on the edge of nowhere.
If a local was sitting beside you, this is the bit where they'd lean in.
Galmoy is small. One pub, basic amenities. Go to Rathdowney or Kilkenny city for more.
Public transport is limited. You need a car to get around.
The mine is closed. There is no visitor infrastructure around it.
East of Portlaoise via N77, toward Kilkenny. About 25 km.
Limited local service.
