The sheep ford. Quiet village north of Monaghan. Hiking, cycling, canoeing.

Emyvale (Irish: Scairbh na gCaorach, meaning "shallow ford of the sheep") is a small village in north Monaghan. The old name tells the story — a ford where sheep crossed. The landscape still looks that way — water, green hills, pastoral.

The McKenna clan has historical significance in the area. Lough Avaghan is nearby. The village markets itself for outdoor pursuits — hiking the drumlins, cycling through quiet roads, canoeing if you want water activity. The landscape supports all three.

It is not a tourist destination. It is a small Irish village in good drumlin country. If you came for walking, water, and quiet, this is the place.

Scairbh na gCaorach

The Name

The Irish name means "shallow ford of the sheep" — a direct description of the water and the livestock economy that defined the place before and after the plantation. The townland was officially called Scarnageeragh in English records but is remembered by the Irish name.

Local history

The McKenna Clan

The McKenna clan held significant territory in the area and left marks on the landscape and the genealogy. The name is still common in Monaghan.

Modern use

Outdoor Recreation

The drumlin landscape and the Lough Avaghan waterway have made Emyvale a base for hiking, cycling, and canoeing. The quiet is an asset.
