The Lough Derg
STOP 07 / 07
Baile Uí Bhraonáin · Co. Clare

A village on the western shore of Lough Derg where boats go out to Holy Island and the water is the reason to come.

Mountshannon is a harbour village on the western shore of Lough Derg, the largest lake on the River Shannon. The village sits above the pier at the water's edge. From here, boats go out to Inis Cealtra - Holy Island - a monastic settlement in the middle of the lake that functioned from the 6th century to the 12th and still has its round tower standing.

Holy Island is one of the better-preserved early Christian sites in Ireland. Five churches, a round tower, a burial ground with medieval grave slabs, and a hermit's cell. The island has no permanent population and no development. You reach it by ferry from the pier in summer. In winter, the boats stop.

The village itself is quiet: a street, a pub, a harbour with sailing and fishing boats. Anglers come for the lake. Sailors moor here. The Tipperary shore is visible across the water. The R352 runs north to Scariff and south toward Killaloe; it is a genuinely good lake drive.

At a glance.

Three things every local will eventually mention. Read these and you've already understood more than most day-trippers do.

The pubs.

None of these are themed Irish pubs, because they don't need to be. A few that earn the trip:

Keane's Bar

Village local by the lake
Pub

The main pub in the village. Food and drink. Worth checking opening times outside summer.

Stories & lore.

The reason to come back. The things every local will eventually tell you about, usually after the second pint.

6th-century monastery, round tower still standing

Holy Island (Inis Cealtra)

Inis Cealtra - Holy Island in English - was founded as a monastic settlement in the 6th century, traditionally associated with St Colm of Terryglass. It grew into a significant site with multiple churches. The round tower is largely intact. The island was raided by the Vikings in the 9th century and remained active into the 12th century. It is now uninhabited. The ferry runs from Mountshannon pier in summer.

Ireland's third-largest lake

Lough Derg

Lough Derg is the largest lake on the River Shannon and one of the largest in Ireland, at about 130 square kilometres. The western shore - Mountshannon's side - is in Clare; the eastern shore is in Tipperary and Galway. The lake has been used for fishing, transport, and pilgrimage for over a thousand years. Sailing and angling are the main activities now.
