6th-century monastery, round tower still standing
Holy Island (Inis Cealtra)
Inis Cealtra - Holy Island in English - was founded as a monastic settlement in the 6th century, traditionally associated with St Colm of Terryglass. It grew into a significant site with multiple churches. The round tower is largely intact. The island was raided by the Vikings in the 9th century and remained active into the 12th century. It is now uninhabited. The ferry runs from Mountshannon pier in summer.
Ireland's third-largest lake
Lough Derg
Lough Derg is the largest lake on the River Shannon and one of the largest in Ireland, at about 130 square kilometres. The western shore - Mountshannon's side - is in Clare; the eastern shore is in Tipperary and Galway. The lake has been used for fishing, transport, and pilgrimage for over a thousand years. Sailing and angling are the main activities now.
