The circle
Nine standing stones in a ring about 2km south of the village. Bronze Age, well-preserved, atmospheric. One of the better circles on the Beara. Worth the walk.
Ardgroom is on the northern shore of the Beara Peninsula, remote even by Beara standards. The population is maybe two hundred. There's a pub or two. There's not much else, and that's the entire appeal.
Come for the stone circle — nine standing stones in a rough ring, Bronze Age, better-preserved than the reputation. Come for the walk to it through the bog. Come for the fact that the tourist coaches don't come here. Come for the water views and the silence and the sense that you're actually somewhere, not just passing through somewhere.
Don't come expecting a café or a gift shop. Don't come expecting services. Come the way people came five thousand years ago: with intention, time, and the ability to sit with stones.
Three things every local will eventually mention. Read these and you've already understood more than most day-trippers do.
Two kilometres out. Less visited than Drombeg. Quieter. One of the better-preserved circles on the peninsula — the kind that rewards standing in it for twenty minutes.

The reason to come back. The things every local will eventually tell you about, usually after the second pint.
Wear waterproofs. Bring a sandwich. Tell someone where you're going if it's the mountain.
There is no bad time. There are different times.
Clear light, bog is less waterlogged than it will be. Quiet.
Warmest, longest daylight. Midges are a thing. Bring repellent and a grin.
The Beara at its best. Golden light, the season changes fast, the place is more itself.
Cold, wet, bog is bog. Do it only if you like walking in weather.
