Ardgroom
Dhá Dhroim

The Beara Peninsula
STOP 08 / 08
Dhá Dhroim · Co. Cork

A stone circle and a view across water to Kerry. Everything else is intention.

Ardgroom is on the northern shore of the Beara Peninsula, remote even by Beara standards. The population is maybe two hundred. There's a pub or two. There's not much else, and that's the entire appeal.

Come for the stone circle — nine standing stones in a rough ring, Bronze Age, better-preserved than the reputation. Come for the walk to it through the bog. Come for the fact that the tourist coaches don't come here. Come for the water views and the silence and the sense that you're actually somewhere, not just passing through somewhere.

Don't come expecting a café or a gift shop. Don't come expecting services. Come the way people came five thousand years ago: with intention, time, and the ability to sit with stones.

At a glance.

Three things every local will eventually mention. Read these and you've already understood more than most day-trippers do.

The pubs.

None of these are themed Irish pubs, because they don't need to be. A few that earn the trip:

Stories & lore.

The reason to come back. The things every local will eventually tell you about, usually after the second pint.

Bronze Age

The circle

Nine standing stones in a ring about 2km south of the village. Bronze Age, well-preserved, atmospheric. One of the better circles on the Beara. Worth the walk.

Very West Cork

The peninsula

The Beara is one of the western peninsulas — higher, rougher, less touristy than the Ring of Kerry. Ardgroom sits on its northern shore, looking across at Kenmare and Kerry. It feels like the edge of something.

A feature, not a bug

The remoteness

Castletownbere is the nearest town with real services — 16km west. Kenmare is across the water. That distance is deliberate. You come here because you want to be away, not because you want to be entertained.

Things to do outside.

Wear waterproofs. Bring a sandwich. Tell someone where you're going if it's the mountain.

Ardgroom Stone Circle Out through the bog. Nine standing stones. Bronze Age. The kind of place where twenty minutes in silence is the whole purpose.

Kenmare River views From the village out toward the water. The estuary sits there. Kerry sits across it. That"s enough of an outing.
