Shankill Castle
A few kilometres from Paulstown, where Kilkenny and Carlow meet. It began as a Butler tower-house—the family that owned half the county. Peter Aylward bought it in 1708 and rebuilt it, setting it in formal parkland with a vista, a canal, and stone walls that curve like they are meant to. In the 19th century it was enlarged and given a polyhedral sundial, a gothic porch with the Aylward crest, and a conservatory. The grounds can be visited. The house has tours. It is still a place where design and time have struck a truce.
