1770, planned grid
The de Vesci estate town
Abbeyleix was laid out by the de Vesci family as a planned estate town in 1770. Georgian grid plan, wide streets, estate control. The town was purpose-built to serve the de Vesci lands. The estate still owns the central area.
Old retail, fading
Morrissey's grocery bar
Morrissey's is a traditional grocery with a bar at the back. You enter through the shop, buy milk and bread, then sit at the bar behind. It's a vanishing form of Irish retail. Few places like this still exist.
2010s designation
Heritage Town status
Abbeyleix became a Heritage Town, giving it official protection and funding for restoration. The main street is traffic-calmed. The buildings are maintained. It's one of the better-preserved small towns in Laois.
