Founded 1927
The Benedictines arrive
Glenstal Abbey was established in 1927 when a community of monks from Maredsous Abbey in Belgium came to Ireland and purchased land above Murroe. They built the abbey from stone, according to the Rule of Saint Benedict — eight hours of prayer, eight hours of labour, eight hours of rest. The cycle has continued unbroken since. The abbey church is open to visitors who wish to attend Mass. The bell that marks the hours has rung every day for nearly a century.
Glenstal Abbey School
The school
From 1941 onward, Glenstal Abbey School operated as a boarding school for boys in the monastery grounds. The abbey continues to function as a monastery. Check current school and visitor status before planning a visit. Visitors should verify current opening hours and whether the grounds are accessible beyond the abbey church itself.
Why Murroe has no pub
The quiet
Murroe is a monastery village in the strictest sense. The abbey dominates. There is no pub because there was never need for one — the village grew around monastic life, not around commercial life. Cappamore, down the road, has the pub. Murroe has silence and the Rule.
