Abbeylara is a quiet village in Co. Longford, though it is listed administratively under Offaly in the ireland-areas taxonomy. The settlement sits on the Longford plain, surrounded by farmland and small holdings. It's the kind of place where you stop for a pint if you're passing through, not to stay.
The village has two main claims: one historical, one recent. The abbey itself was founded by the Cistercians and now exists in ruin, a reminder of the monastic wealth that once spread across rural Ireland. In 2000, Abbeylara became the subject of a national controversy when Gardaí shot and killed John Carthy, a local man in crisis, in an incident that led to inquiries and lasting questions about police procedure.
