Monastic wealth in the Longford plain
The Cistercian abbey
Abbeylara Abbey was founded by the Cistercian order and was part of the wider medieval wealth that came from monastic labour and land grant. The order was known for discipline, prayer, and agricultural innovation. The abbey is now a ruin, but the site is still recognizable — walls, stones, the shape of where a community once lived and worked.
A tragedy that changed the national conversation
The 2000 shooting
On 20 April 2000, John Carthy, a 26-year-old local man, was shot and killed by members of An Garda Síochána (Irish police) outside his home in Abbeylara. He had called the emergency line himself while in mental distress. The incident sparked a public inquiry and lasting debate about police use of force and mental health intervention. It remains one of Ireland's most controversial police shootings.
