Gothic castle, pyramid mausoleum, and mountain trails at the edge of the midlands.

Kinnitty is a small village in south-east Offaly at the foot of the Slieve Bloom Mountains. It is not on the main road and not in a hurry. The castle dominates the landscape—a privately-owned Gothic Revival building now operating as a hotel, and worth a night if you like stone towers and working fireplaces.

What makes Kinnitty unusual: a 30-foot pyramid stands in the Church of Ireland churchyard, built as a mausoleum for the Bernard family. It is an exact replica of the Pyramid of Cheops and is the only one of its kind in Ireland. The 9th-century High Cross stands nearby. Together they make Kinnitty a small book of Irish history.

The Slieve Bloom Mountains are low, 500–900 metres, but beautiful. Kinnitty is the main entry village. Trails loop through forest, follow streams, and climb open ridge. The walking club organizes guided walks every weekend.

At a glance.

Three things every local will eventually mention. Read these and you've already understood more than most day-trippers do.

The pubs.

None of these are themed Irish pubs, because they don't need to be. A few that earn the trip:

Giltraps Pub

Locals, quiet

Family-run bar on Main Street. Basic, friendly, real. The kind of pub where regulars sit in the same seats every evening.

Stories & lore.

The reason to come back. The things every local will eventually tell you about, usually after the second pint.

Mausoleum for landlords

The pyramid

In the 1830s Richard Wellesley-Bernard built a pyramid in the churchyard—an exact replica of the Egyptian Pyramid of Cheops, scaled down but still 30 feet tall. It took four years. He built it as a burial chamber for his family. No other pyramid like it exists in Ireland. Steps lead down below ground level into the interior.

Early medieval stone

The High Cross

A 9th-century High Cross stands in the castle grounds and churchyard. It was erected by the monastic abbot as a focal point for prayer and pilgrimage. The cross is carved sandstone, weathered but still legible. It is one of several monastic crosses in Offaly.

Gothic Revival grandeur

The castle

Kinnitty Castle was built in 1836 in the Gothic Revival style by the Bernard family, who owned the land. It has towers, turrets, and arrow-slit windows designed to look medieval (though built 400 years after medieval times ended). It is now a hotel, and you can stay inside.

What to skip.

Honestly? Don't bother.

If a local was sitting beside you, this is the bit where they'd lean in.

×
Comparing the pyramid to Egyptian history

It is not a real pyramid. It is a mausoleum built by a rich Irish landlord in the 1830s because he liked pyramids. Enjoy it as Victorian eccentricity, not as archaeology.

×
Visiting in high summer without booking the castle

The castle has limited rooms. It fills early. If you want to stay, book months ahead. Day visitors can still walk the grounds.
