Kilkerrin Battery
The Kilkerrin Battery Fortress was built in the early 19th century by the British Army. The strategic logic was sound: the Shannon estuary was the most navigable approach to the interior of Munster. Napoleon's alliance with Ireland's United Irishmen made the threat credible. The fortress was built on the Labasheeda peninsula to cover the channel. Napoleon sailed nowhere near west Clare. The battery sat, was garrisoned for a generation, then handed over to silence. The building survives.
