Barleycove
Cuan Eorna

The West Cork
STOP 04 / 04
Cuan Eorna · Co. Cork

Three miles of white sand and a lagoon. The beach is the point. Everything else is detail.

Barleycove is technically not a village. It's a car park, a seasonal café, and three miles of strand backed by dunes that're a Special Area of Conservation. That's it. That's the whole thing. And it's enough.

Behind the beach is a tidal lagoon — shallow, connected to the sea, full of waders and seals if you're quiet about it. A pontoon bridge crosses it when the tide allows. When it doesn't, you wade. Either way, it's the detail that makes this beach stick in your head.

Mizen Head is three kilometres further west — the actual tip of the peninsula, weather station and all. Crookhaven is east. But come here for the sand and the lagoon. Don't expect services. Don't expect a town. Expect to walk.

At a glance.

Three things every local will eventually mention. Read these and you've already understood more than most day-trippers do.

Things to do outside.

Wear waterproofs. Bring a sandwich. Tell someone where you're going if it's the mountain.

Car park to beach Walk through the dune path. It's marked. Don't cut across the dunes — they're protected and they're fragile. The path opens onto the lagoon shore.

Cross the lagoon The pontoon bridge operates seasonally (usually summer). When it's out, you wade. The lagoon is shallow — knee-deep at most. Either way, you get across. Either way, you'll remember it.

Mizen Head Follow the coast path west from the beach. The cliff path is good. The weather station is at the tip. The view is as far west as you can stand.
