A small village anchored by Emo Court — a James Gandon neoclassical mansion, free to visit, set in parkland with redwoods.

Emo is a small village in north-central Laois, famous for Emo Court — a neoclassical mansion designed by James Gandon and built between 1790 and 1800. The house is set in 200 acres of parkland with artificial lakes, tree-lined avenues, and giant redwoods planted in the 19th century. It is owned by the Office of Public Works and is free to visit.

The village itself is small and quiet. It exists because of the house. Come for the house, walk the grounds, then move on.

Three things every local will eventually mention. Read these and you've already understood more than most day-trippers do.

Stories & lore.

The reason to come back. The things every local will eventually tell you about, usually after the second pint.

James Gandon, 1790–1800

Emo Court

Emo Court was designed by James Gandon, one of Ireland's greatest architects (he also designed the Custom House in Dublin). The house is a perfect expression of neoclassical design — formal, symmetrical, elegant. The interior is exceptional. It took a decade to build. The Gandon name is the whole architecture of the place.

200-year-old trees

The redwoods

The parkland is planted with giant Californian redwoods, planted in the 19th century when the estate was at its height. They are now 200+ feet tall and the most striking feature of the grounds. They are the reason to walk the estate.
