Local Tips

Allow two hours as a minimum. The M1 north from Dublin to the border and on to Belfast International runs freely most of the time, but Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings can add 20 to 30 minutes on the Dublin side. Your driver will account for this, but it’s worth booking with a bit of breathing room before your flight.

Belfast International is in Aldergrove, not in the city. It sits about 18km northwest of Belfast city centre, off the M2. If you’re flying from Belfast International rather than George Best City Airport, make sure your transfer address is correct when booking. The two airports are 30 minutes apart.

The border crossing on the N1/A1 is seamless. There are no stops or customs checks at the border between the Republic and Northern Ireland. The road crosses the county boundary from Louth into Down without any formalities, so you won’t see your journey interrupted.

Belfast International has a decent food hall airside. If you’re arriving with time to spare, the airside restaurants are better than many comparable airports. That said, if you’re departing from the check-in side, the pre-security options are more limited.

  • Carlingford Lough — a scenic sea inlet between the Cooley and Mourne mountains that your route passes close to on the way north.
  • Newry — a border city with a lively canal quarter and a good market on Thursday and Saturday, roughly halfway between Dublin and Belfast.
  • Antrim Coast Road — Northern Ireland’s famous coastal drive along the Causeway Coast, accessible from Belfast International in under an hour.
