Local Tips

Belfast City Airport is much closer to the city than the international one. George Best Belfast City Airport (BHD) sits right on the edge of the city along Belfast Lough - a short taxi or bus ride from the centre. Belfast International (BFS) at Aldergrove is about 30km outside the city. If you’re flying out of BHD, you’re dealing with a much smaller, calmer airport, which is worth factoring into how early you leave Dublin.

The road north passes through some fine countryside. The M1 motorway from Dublin to Belfast cuts through the Boyne Valley and up through Co. Louth and Co. Armagh. It’s not the most scenic route in Ireland, but you get glimpses of the Mourne Mountains as you approach Belfast on a clear day - a good sign that the landscape around the city is worth exploring if you have time.

Currency flips at the border. Northern Ireland uses sterling rather than euros. On this journey you’re heading north, so having some GBP is useful if you want to grab anything at the airport. The crossing itself is invisible - no border infrastructure, no passport check - but the currency and some practical differences (speed limits in miles per hour, for example) kick in as soon as you’re in the North.

Check your luggage allowance before you travel. Each passenger on this transfer is permitted one standard suitcase (46x69x29cm). If you’re heading to the airport with golf clubs, a second bag, or anything oversized, it’s worth contacting the operator in advance to confirm what can be accommodated and whether additional charges apply.
