Local Tips

Malahide village is worth a slow morning before your transfer departs. The main street has a good selection of cafes and independent shops, and Malahide Castle and Gardens sits just a short walk from the village centre - the grounds are open early and it’s a peaceful place for a walk before you set off north.

The drive from Malahide to Belfast City Airport takes around 2 hours under normal conditions, following the M1 motorway north through Drogheda and Newry before crossing into Northern Ireland. The border crossing is seamless - there are no passport checks or stops - but you are crossing into a different jurisdiction, so any Northern Irish pounds in your pocket will be handy for incidentals at the airport.

Belfast City Airport (BHD) sits right beside Belfast Lough, just a few minutes from the city centre. It’s a much smaller and calmer airport than Belfast International (BFS), which makes check-in and security a lot quicker. Most flights from BHD operate to UK regional destinations and some European routes.

Allow a bit of extra time if you’re travelling on a Friday afternoon - the M1 between Dublin and Drogheda can back up significantly on Friday evenings, and the Newry bypass also sees heavier traffic heading into the weekend.
