Co. Clare’s Atlantic coastline is the real draw, and it repays a slow approach. The Cliffs of Moher are spectacular, but the drive along the Wild Atlantic Way south from Doolin or north from Lahinch is worth doing when you have time. The light in the late afternoon is something else out on that coast.
Ennis is the county town and a good base. It’s compact, walkable, and has a genuinely strong traditional music scene - particularly around the pubs on Abbey Street and O’Connell Square. Sessions tend to happen naturally rather than being advertised, so asking at the bar is usually the best way to find out what’s on.
The Burren is one of the stranger and more beautiful landscapes in Ireland. The limestone pavement stretching north from Kilfenora towards Ballyvaughan looks almost lunar in certain lights, and the wildflowers in May and June are remarkable. If your accommodation is anywhere near that part of Clare, it’s worth building in some time to walk it.
Weather on the Clare coast moves fast. What’s a clear morning can turn Atlantic grey by lunchtime, especially if you’re out near the cliffs. A waterproof layer packed somewhere accessible rather than buried in a checked bag makes a real difference.
