Local Tips

Blarney Castle is busiest between 10am and 2pm. If you’re visiting the castle itself and want to kiss the Blarney Stone without a long queue on the battlements, aim for first thing in the morning or after 3pm. The grounds open at 9am most days and the light is better for photos in the morning.

Blarney village has more going on than most people expect. The square has a handful of good cafes and pubs, and the Blarney Woollen Mills is one of the largest Irish craft retailers in the country if you want to pick up gifts. It’s right across from the castle entrance.

The Rock Close inside the castle grounds is genuinely atmospheric. Most visitors head straight for the Stone and miss the druid’s cave, the wishing steps, and the witch’s kitchen tucked into the limestone below the castle. Allow an extra 30 minutes for the lower garden if you can.

Cork city is 8km south and well worth a few hours if you’re staying in the area. The English Market in the city centre has been trading since 1788 and is one of the best food markets in the country. It’s an easy taxi or bus ride from Blarney.
