Youghal is a port town on the Blackwater River estuary, known for its stretch of intact medieval town walls and the Clock Gate Tower that stands astride Main Street. It’s one of the better-preserved historic towns on the Cork coast.
Youghal’s town walls are the first thing worth seeking out. A substantial section of the medieval walls still stands on the hillside above the town, with towers at intervals along the circuit. The walk up from Main Street takes about ten minutes and the views over the harbour are good from the top.
The Clock Gate Tower is both a landmark and a museum. Built in 1777, it straddles the main road through the centre of Youghal and was used as a jail at various points in its history. It’s been restored and is open to visitors - the interior tells the story of the tower and the town, and the upper levels give you a clear view up and down Main Street.
Youghal Strand stretches south from the town along the bay. It’s a traditional seaside beach backed by a promenade, and it draws a local summer crowd. If you’re arriving mid-afternoon on a fine day and want to shake off the journey before checking in, it’s an easy ten-minute walk from the town centre.
The Blackwater Valley is directly north of Youghal. The river runs through wooded farmland between Cork and Waterford, and the villages along the valley - particularly Cappoquin and Lismore - are worth a drive if you’re spending more than a night in the area. Lismore Castle Gardens are open to the public in season and the town itself is small but well worth a stop.
