Local Tips

Derry is one of Ireland’s great walled cities. The 17th-century walls are still fully intact and walkable - a circuit takes about an hour, and the views over the Bogside and out across the city are worth it. If you’re arriving in the evening, the walls are lit up and the city centre is lively around Waterloo Street.

The drive up from Dublin takes you through some interesting country. Once you cross into Northern Ireland, the landscape opens up noticeably. If you’re new to the area, your driver can often give you a sense of what’s coming up - don’t be shy about asking.

Parking in Derry city centre is manageable but can be tight around the walled area. If your accommodation is near the Guildhall or the Diamond, a private drop-off is much easier than trying to navigate yourself with bags. Your driver will get you as close to the door as the road allows.

Eating and drinking in Derry is genuinely good value. The Craft Village near the walls has a few decent spots, and Shipquay Street and the surrounding lanes have a solid range of cafes and restaurants. It’s worth having a plan for your first evening rather than winging it after a long journey.
