Local Tips

Ballynahinch Castle sits on a 700-acre estate in the heart of Connemara. The grounds include the Owenmore River, which is a working salmon fishery. If you’re there in spring or early summer and have any interest in fishing, it’s worth asking at reception about availability - the gillie-guided sessions on the river are a very particular kind of Connemara day.

The drive through Connemara is worth staying awake for. Once you’re past Galway city and heading into the west, the landscape shifts noticeably - bog, mountain, lake, and Atlantic light all happening at once. If the weather is playing along, the stretch around Recess and the Twelve Bens is something you’ll want to look up from your phone for.

Roundstone is about 20 minutes from the castle and worth an afternoon. It’s a small harbour village with a few good seafood spots and the Malachy Kearns bodhran workshop, where they’ve been making the traditional Irish drum for decades. The workshop is genuinely open to visitors rather than a set-piece, and you can watch the process.

Clifden is the nearest town of any size. It has a good range of restaurants and some reliable spots for traditional music in the evenings. Your hotel concierge at Ballynahinch will have current recommendations - what’s good in Clifden changes year to year and they’ll know what’s worth the drive.
