Dublin Bay Seal Kayaking Safari at Dalkey

About This Tour

Just off the south Dublin coast, a colony of wild grey seals has made Dalkey Island home - and this guided kayaking safari brings you right to them. The island sits a short paddle from the mainland, and the seals here are curious creatures, completely at ease with kayakers drifting past. It’s a genuinely wild encounter that happens a stone’s throw from one of Dublin’s most well-heeled suburbs.

You set off from the slipway at Bullock Harbour. After a safety briefing and kit check, you paddle out across sheltered water toward the island. Your guides know the seals’ rhythms and habits, so they position you where you’re most likely to get close without disturbing them - these animals are protected and the approach is always respectful. Grey seals are naturally inquisitive, though, and it’s not unusual for them to swim right up to your kayak for a look.

Beyond the seals, the setting is worth the trip on its own. Dalkey Island has a ruined church and a Martello tower, the water is clear, and the views across Killiney Bay are among the best you’ll find around Dublin. With a 4.9-star rating from 380 reviews, this is one of the highest-rated outdoor experiences in the city. Book early - it sells out.

Local Tips

Dalkey itself is well worth an hour before or after your paddle. The village has a castle, a handful of excellent cafes, and a genuine local feel despite being only 12 kilometres from the city centre. Finnegan’s pub on the main street is one of the better local pubs on the DART line - good food, good atmosphere, and far enough from the tourist trail to feel real.

The DART from Pearse or Tara Street gets you to Dalkey station in around 25 minutes, and Bullock Harbour is a walkable 15 minutes from there. It’s by far the easiest way in from the city centre and avoids any parking headaches on busy weekends.

Wear or bring a swimsuit or thermal base layer under your clothes - you’ll be changing into a wetsuit at the harbour and it’s much easier if you’re already sorted underneath. The guides will show you how the kit goes on, but having a swimsuit on already saves time at the briefing.

If you’re combining this with a wider south Dublin day, Killiney Hill Park is a 10-minute drive from Bullock Harbour and gives you a view across the bay from above - a nice contrast to the water-level perspective you get during the kayak. The hill is free to walk, takes around 45 minutes to the top, and looks out over the same stretch of coast you’ll have just paddled through.
