Behind a door that most visitors to Bow Street never notice sits JJ’s Office - a beautifully restored room that served as John Jameson’s private quarters in the original distillery. This is the only way in, and the atmosphere earns its description: low lighting, leather chairs, and the kind of quiet that makes you lean forward and pay attention.
A Jameson Brand Ambassador leads you through four premium whiskeys from the Jameson portfolio. These aren’t your standard bar pours. The tasting includes the seasonal Maker’s Choice expression - a limited whiskey that changes throughout the year and gives you a sense of the more experimental work happening at Midleton. You’ll learn to nose properly, identify flavour profiles, and understand why triple distillation gives Irish whiskey its characteristic smoothness.
The cask draw is the part that stays with you. You go into the live maturation warehouse next door and draw whiskey directly from the barrel - tasting it before blending and bottling have shaped it into what you’d recognise on a shelf. It reframes the whole process. At €40 for an hour in a private room with four premium pours and a cask draw, you’d struggle to find better value for a whiskey experience in Dublin.
Take the Luas Red Line to Smithfield and you’re there in minutes. The stop is called Smithfield, and the distillery on Bow Street is a two-minute walk. It’s much easier than dealing with traffic in this part of the city, and the Smithfield Square itself is worth a few minutes of your time - it’s one of Dublin’s bigger open squares and the area around it has changed a lot in recent years.
Ask your Brand Ambassador about the Maker’s Choice before the session. The seasonal expression changes throughout the year, and knowing a little about what’s currently in it gives you something specific to look out for when you’re nosing and tasting. The ambassadors are genuinely knowledgeable and happy to go deeper if you’re interested.
Nose before you taste, always. If you’re not used to whiskey tastings, the temptation is to go straight for the sip. Resist it. Hold the glass at chest height first, then chin height, then nose it properly before tasting. The Brand Ambassador will walk you through it, but coming in knowing that makes the session click faster.
Build in time to explore the main Jameson Distillery visitor experience after your session if you haven’t done it before. The Bow Street experience covers the history of the distillery well, and the building itself is impressive. The JJ’s Office session is a separate ticketed experience, so you’d need to book the standard tour separately - but pairing the two in one afternoon gives you a thorough picture.
