There’s a real difference between ordering a whiskey cocktail and knowing how to make one properly. This class at the Jameson Distillery on Bow Street puts professional tools in your hands and a Jameson Brand Ambassador at your side - and by the end of the hour you’ll have shaken, stirred, and sipped your way through three classic cocktails you can confidently recreate at home.
The lineup covers essential ground: the Whiskey Sour, which teaches you how to balance sweet and sour; the Old Fashioned, the cocktail that lets the whiskey do most of the talking; and the Jameson Punch, a bolder creation that shows how whiskey plays with fruit and spice. Your instructor demonstrates each step, then you make your own - measuring, muddling, shaking, straining, and garnishing. A skilled bartender circulates throughout, correcting technique and sharing the kind of tips that separate a decent home cocktail from a genuinely impressive one.
Between the shaking and sipping, you pick up the history of Jameson and the broader story of Irish whiskey. It adds real depth without slowing down the fun. You leave with all three cocktails consumed, a proper cocktail recipe book, and the skills to impress at your next gathering. The class also includes the guided Bow Street Experience tour of the distillery.
Smithfield is worth exploring before or after. The Jameson Distillery sits in Smithfield Square, one of Dublin’s larger public squares, with a mix of cafes, bars, and the Old Jameson Distillery chimney visible from the square itself. Arrive a bit early and have a walk around - it’s a different part of Dublin from the usual tourist footprint and worth knowing about.
The cocktail book is genuinely useful. A lot of take-home souvenirs from experiences like this end up forgotten in a drawer. The recipe book from this class is actually worth keeping on the kitchen shelf - the three cocktails you make are classics that work at home, and having the measured ratios and technique notes to hand means you’ll actually use it.
The Old Fashioned is the one to practise. Of the three cocktails, the Old Fashioned is the one that separates a capable home bartender from someone who just knows how to shake things together. Getting the technique right during the class - the muddling, the ratios - is worth paying attention to, because it’s the one you’ll be making most often.
No experience needed, but pay attention. The class is designed for complete beginners, and the Brand Ambassador is there to guide you through every step. That said, you’ll get more out of it if you actually focus during the demonstrations rather than just waiting for your turn to shake.
Getting there from the city centre. The Luas Red Line stops at Smithfield, which is a two-minute walk from the distillery. If you’re coming from O’Connell Street, it’s also an easy 15-minute walk across the north quays. Don’t rely on driving - Smithfield parking is limited.
