Dalkey Quarry is one of those spots that Dubliners in the know have been coming to for years. There are over 200 climbing routes on excellent-grip granite, and the views over Dublin Bay from the rock face are the kind that make every climb feel worthwhile. This private half-day session gives you 2.5 hours at the quarry with experienced, qualified guides who take you through the whole experience safely and at your own pace.
You start with a safety briefing before a short walk to the quarry. The guides begin with easier routes to build your confidence, then gradually introduce more challenging climbs as you find your feet. This is a proper climbing session, not just a taster - you’ll work on real technique and come away with a genuine feel for the sport. All specialist kit is provided: harness, helmet, ropes, everything you need.
After climbing, you can explore Killiney Hill for views across the Wicklow Mountains and beyond. Getting here is easy: the DART from Dublin city centre drops you at Dalkey station, a 15-minute walk from the meeting point. There’s also free parking nearby if you’re driving.
Plenty of free parking nearby, or take the DART from Dublin city centre to Dalkey station - it’s a 15-minute walk to the meeting point from there.
The DART to Dalkey is part of the experience, not just a means of transport. The coastal line from Dublin runs right along the bay through Sandymount, Blackrock, and Dun Laoghaire before arriving at Dalkey, and the views of the water on a clear morning are hard to beat. Give yourself a little extra time so you’re not rushing the walk from the station to the meeting point.
Dalkey village is worth spending time in before or after your session. It’s a small, genuinely pleasant village with good cafes and pubs - a world away from the city centre tourist circuit. If you’re arriving early, grab a coffee there rather than rushing straight to the quarry.
Don’t worry if you’ve never climbed before. The guides pitch the session well for complete beginners, starting on routes that build your confidence before moving to anything more challenging. The granite at Dalkey Quarry has excellent grip, which helps a lot when you’re getting started. The most common thing first-timers say afterwards is that it was less intimidating than they expected.
Wear clothes you can move in freely, and avoid anything too baggy that might catch on the rock or the harness. Layers are sensible - it can be warm in the quarry when the sun’s out but cool in the shade, and the wind off the bay picks up on the higher routes.
After the climb, if your legs are still willing, the walk up Killiney Hill from the quarry is worth every step. The view from the top - across Killiney Bay, Bray Head, and the Wicklow Mountains - is one of the finest you’ll find within an hour of Dublin city centre, and it’s completely free.
