Horror Hike Dublin Tour

About This Tour

Dublin has a genuinely dark side, and this tour takes you straight into the heart of it. It starts with an interactive bus journey from Christ Church, where professional actors set the scene with tales of murder, mayhem and the macabre. Then you head for the Dublin Mountains and the ruins of the Hellfire Club - a place with a reputation so sinister that locals still cross themselves when they pass it.

The hike up Montpelier Hill is not long but it is atmospheric, especially when actors appear from behind ancient walls to deliver scenes that will make you jump. The views from the top are genuinely spectacular, with all of Dublin spread out below you - a brilliant contrast with the horror unfolding around you. It’s part theatre, part history lesson, part mountain walk, and it works brilliantly.

This is not a gentle ghost tour with a few spooky stories. The actors are committed, the scares are real, and the history behind it all is genuinely fascinating. It regularly sells out, so booking ahead is essential.

Local Tips

Dress for the mountain, not for the city. Montpelier Hill sits at around 383 metres and the weather can change fast. Even on a summer evening it tends to be a good bit colder and windier up there than it is in the city below. Waterproofs and proper walking shoes are not optional - they’re the difference between a great night and a miserable one.

The Hellfire Club has a history that predates the tour by centuries. The stone building on the summit was built in 1725 as a hunting lodge for William Conolly, Speaker of the Irish Parliament. It was later used by the Dublin Hellfire Club in the 1730s - a group of wealthy young men with a reputation for drinking, gambling and worse. Local folklore says the devil himself turned up to one of their meetings, which may or may not explain the atmosphere.

Go earlier in the season if you want daylight for the views. The hike up offers a sweeping panorama across Dublin and beyond - on a clear night you can see the bay, the Wicklow Mountains, and lights stretching all the way to the horizon. Arriving when there’s still some light left in the sky gives you a completely different experience before the dark sets in properly.

This tour regularly sells out, especially around Halloween. If you’re visiting in October and this is on your list, book as early as you can. The October run-up is popular with locals as much as with visitors, and places fill weeks in advance.

Christ Church is a great spot to arrive early. The departure point outside Dublinia puts you right beside one of Dublin’s oldest cathedrals. If you’re coming from the city centre, you might have time for a quick look at the area around the cathedral before the bus departs - it’s a part of the old city that rewards even a few minutes of attention.
