This self-guided urban adventure takes you through Dublin’s historic streets in a way a regular walking tour never would. A trail of cryptic riddles arrives directly to your phone - solve each clue to unlock the next one, and the city gradually opens up around you as you go deeper into its hidden corners and stranger stories.
The whole thing runs through Telegram, which is free to download on any smartphone from any app store. You’ll walk roughly 4 km over about 4 hours, piecing together the story of Dubh Linn - the black pool that Dublin grew from. It’s a private experience, so it’s just your group moving at your own pace, deciding when to stop, when to double back, and when to admit that a clue is harder than it looks.
It suits curious visitors, groups of friends, and anyone who finds a standard sightseeing tour a bit too passive. You’re solving something as you go, which changes the way you look at the streets around you.
Download Telegram before you leave your accommodation. It sounds obvious but it’s easy to forget, and trying to set up an app while standing on a busy street in the middle of Dublin isn’t the ideal start. Download it in advance, set up your account, and you’re ready to go as soon as you hit the first clue.
Take your time at each location. The clues are designed to draw your attention to specific details in the streetscape - a carving, a plaque, a street name, an architectural feature - that most people walk straight past. The slower you go, the more you’ll notice, and the more the city’s older layers start to show through.
Bring a phone battery pack. Four hours on an active phone with Telegram running, possibly with maps open too, can drain a battery faster than you’d expect. A small power bank in your bag is worth the extra weight, especially if you’re stopping to photograph things along the way.
Dublin’s weather is part of the experience. The route covers the city’s historic core, and a bit of rain actually suits it rather well - the old stone looks better wet, and the crowds thin out nicely. A small waterproof jacket packs flat and means you won’t need to cut the hunt short because of a shower.
Discuss the clues properly before committing to an answer. The best groups are the ones who argue a bit before moving on. The cryptic format rewards lateral thinking, and a clue that seems impossible on first read often clicks into place when someone in the group reads it aloud and says “wait, what if it means…”
