Slane Castle sits on a hill above the River Boyne in County Meath, about an hour from Dublin. It’s been the home of the Conyngham family, the Earls of Mount Charles, since the late 18th century. The natural amphitheatre in the castle grounds has made it one of Ireland’s most iconic concert venues over the decades, with U2, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and Madonna among the acts who’ve played there.
This private half-day trip picks you up from your Dublin accommodation in a clean, air-conditioned car and takes you there and back with skip-the-line access and a 5-star licensed castle guide for the full interior tour. You’ll hear about the history of the Conyngham family, the stories behind the famous concerts, and the broader heritage of this corner of County Meath. After the guided tour, there’s free time to wander the castle grounds and gardens at your own pace.
It’s a private experience throughout, just your group, and the guide is fluent in English.

Slane village is worth a few minutes if you arrive early. The village has a striking Georgian layout with four identical houses at its crossroads, built in the 18th century. Your driver may pass through on the way to the castle gates. If there’s time, it’s a pleasant spot to stretch your legs and have a look around.
The Boyne Valley is one of the richest archaeological landscapes in Europe. Newgrange, Knowth, and Dowth, the great Neolithic passage tombs of the Bru na Boinne complex, are just a few kilometres from Slane Castle. If you have any flexibility in your day, it’s worth asking whether a stop at the Bru na Boinne visitor centre on the way back would work.
The concert history is a bigger part of the tour than you might expect. The Conyngham family opened the grounds to rock concerts in 1981, and what followed became part of Irish music lore. If you have a particular connection to any of the acts who played there, mention it to your guide early. They tend to have good stories attached to the bigger shows.
The grounds and gardens are the reward after the interior tour. The castle sits on high ground above a bend in the Boyne, and the views from the gardens are genuinely lovely. Give yourself time to walk slowly rather than heading straight back to the car. In summer the gardens are at their best.
This isn’t Newgrange, so don’t expect a prehistoric site. Slane Castle is an 18th-century Anglo-Irish country house with a concert stage in the grounds. If you’re expecting ancient ruins, you might be surprised. If you’re interested in the overlap between Irish aristocratic history and rock music, it’s a genuinely interesting combination.
