At House Bar · Voodoo, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal
Stand-up comedy arrived properly in Letterkenny when local gardener Michael Aiken decided the town needed a room of its own. Slaughter House Comedy is the monthly night he built from scratch at House Bar inside Voodoo, running on the last Friday of each month for €5 at the door. Eight comedians take the stage per show - a deliberate mix of complete newcomers stepping up for the first time and more seasoned acts trying out fresh material on a live crowd. It is the kind of night where you might witness someone’s first-ever set and a polished circuit regular in the same hour, which keeps the room unpredictable in the best possible way. If you have never been to a grassroots comedy club before, this is exactly the format to start with.
Doors open at 8pm and the show kicks off at 8:30pm sharp. With eight comedians on the bill, the pace moves quickly - no one outstays their welcome. Aiken set up the night because he saw how healthy the comedy scene was across Northern Ireland and felt Donegal deserved a proper outlet too. Early lineups leaned on Northern comics to get things started, but the idea from the beginning was to build a local Donegal scene around it. The venue is House Bar, which sits inside Voodoo on the main strip in Letterkenny - a compact room that works well for comedy because the crowd is close to the stage and the energy stays tight. Entry is €5 cash at the door; no booking required.
Letterkenny sits on the N13/N14 and is the main retail and transport hub for Co. Donegal, roughly an hour’s drive from Derry city and about two and a half hours from Dublin via the M1 and N2. Bus Eireann and Faredeal coaches serve the town from Dublin, Derry and Sligo. Voodoo is in the town centre, within easy walking distance of the main bus stops. Parking in Letterkenny town centre is widely available on evenings, with surface car parks off Port Road and along the main street.
Letterkenny is worth arriving early for - the town has a strong food scene and the An Grianan Theatre nearby keeps a busy programme of arts and music year-round. There is more to see in Letterkenny and across Co. Donegal.
