The southwest Donegal coastline has been occupied since the Bronze Age - roughly 4,500 years - and this guided walk with The Discovery Programme brings that long history into focus. Led by archaeologists, the walk departs Killaghtee Community Centre at noon during National Heritage Week and follows a stretch of coast packed with prehistoric burial chambers, rock art, Celtic crosses, ancient forts and castle ruins. It is free to attend, open to anyone with a reasonable level of fitness, and gives you the kind of site-by-site explanation you simply cannot get from a leaflet.
The walk explores the archaeological heritage documented through the Dunkineely Digital Heritage Trail, a community-funded project that has mapped and interpreted over 14 sites of historical interest in the Killaghtee area. Among the highlights the trail covers are three side-by-side wedge tombs dating to around 2,500 BC - a cluster described as genuinely unusual even by Donegal standards - alongside a holy well dedicated to St. Conall from the late 5th century, and the Old Killaghtee Church, home to the Killaghtee Cross gravestone carved around 650 AD. The coastline adds the remains of McSwyne’s Castle, a mid-1400s fortification, and the ruins of Ballysaggart Friary, founded by the same clan for the Franciscan Order shortly afterwards.
The Discovery Programme is Ireland’s state-funded centre for archaeological research and has been running public walks at Heritage Week for years. Guides bring recent research findings into the conversation, so this is not a standard tour - expect to hear what fieldwork has actually uncovered about the area. The walk covers uneven outdoor terrain, so sturdy shoes and weatherproof layers are essential. Plan for roughly 90 minutes on your feet.
Dunkineely sits on the southwest Donegal coast, approximately 40 km from Donegal town. Take the N56 west from Donegal town through Mountcharles and Inver, then continue towards Killybegs - Dunkineely is signposted before you reach the town. The Killaghtee Community Centre is in the Ballymagowan area just outside the village. There is roadside parking available near the centre. Public transport to this part of Donegal is limited, so a car is the practical option for most visitors.
The walk itself covers only part of what the area holds - McSwynes Bay, Bruckless Bay and the broader Killaghtee peninsula reward anyone who takes time to explore beyond the route. There is more to see in Dunkineely and across Co. Donegal.
