At Abbey Hotel · The Diamond, Donegal Town, Co. Donegal
The Abbey Hotel’s country music weekends have built a loyal following across Ireland, and the late September run is one of the most popular dates in the calendar. Running from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 September 2026, this three-day package draws country music fans from all over the country for a full weekend of live music, céilí-style dancing, and the kind of good-natured crowd that genuinely adds to the fun. It suits couples looking for a midweek-free break, groups of friends who’d rather be up dancing than sitting in a concert hall, and solo travellers who know these weekends are an easy way to land in a room full of like-minded people.
From Friday evening through Sunday, the hotel’s ballroom and bar areas host a rotating line-up of well-known Irish country acts. Past and regular performers at the Abbey’s country weekends have included Patrick Feeney, Jimmy Buckley, Mike Denver, David James, and Effie Neill, alongside newer names like Jordan McPolin and Tammy Meehan. The September 25-27 date is billed as Jimmy Buckley’s Dancing Weekend, so expect Buckley as a headline draw with the usual supporting cast of performers spread across the evenings.
The format is simple and deliberate: live sets, dancing, repeat. There is no big-screen production or seated concert setup - this is a proper dancing weekend, with floor space prioritised. The Abbey Bar and the hotel’s food hall keep things going between sets. The weekend package includes two nights’ bed and breakfast and access to all evening dances, with a Sunday extension available for an additional €60 per person sharing. The hotel has also introduced a Loyalty Card scheme - attend five weekends and get 20% off your sixth.
Donegal Town sits on the N15, roughly 40 kilometres south of Letterkenny and about two and a half hours from Dublin via the N3 and N15 or the M1/N2 route through Derry. From Sligo, it is approximately an hour on the N15. Bus Éireann serves Donegal Town from Dublin (Expressway route 30) and from Sligo, though journey times are longer than by car. The Abbey Hotel is right on The Diamond - the central town square - so there is no complicated last-mile to manage on arrival. Street parking is available around The Diamond and in nearby car parks; it is not a large town, so finding a space is rarely an issue outside peak summer.
Donegal Town is a fine base for a weekend - the castle, the old friary ruins, and the quays along the River Eske are all within a short walk of The Diamond. The surrounding county offers some of the most dramatic Atlantic coastline in Ireland, from the cliffs at Slieve League to the beaches of Rossnowlagh, if you want to take a drive before the music starts. There is more to see in Donegal and across Co. Donegal.
