Local Tips

Galway is a working city that happens to be one of the best places in Ireland for live trad music, arts, and food. The city centre is medieval in layout - narrow laneways that cars can’t navigate - so give your driver the exact address and they’ll figure out the approach. Most accommodation in the centre is a short walk from where the vehicle can get to.

The 2h 30m journey from Dublin gives you a decent afternoon arrival. The Salthill Promenade, 10 minutes west of the city centre, is a flat 2 km walk along the bay to a pier with an old saltwater pool - an easy way to shake off the journey before dinner.

For dinner, Ard Bia at Nimmo on Quay Street is the room that locals go back to - locally-sourced menu that changes with the market, upstairs dining room, and worth booking ahead in summer. An Púcán is another local favourite - seafood-leaning with bread that makes an impression.

The Aran Islands are the most common day trip from Galway. The ferry goes from Rossaveal, 40 minutes west - Inis Mór is an hour’s crossing, Inis Oírr is 40 minutes. Build a full day around it and don’t book a fixed return time; the sea makes its own schedule.
