Clonmacnoise and Birr Castle Tour

About This Tour

Most day trips from Dublin go west to Galway or south to Killarney. This one heads into the midlands, to two sites that most visitors never get to, and which genuinely reward the journey.

Clonmacnoise sits on the banks of the Shannon in County Offaly and takes you back to the 6th century, when St Ciarán founded a monastic settlement that would become one of the most important centres of religion, learning, and craftsmanship in all of Ireland. The ruins of several churches, round towers, and high crosses are still standing, their medieval stonework intricate and quietly astonishing. It’s a peaceful place that gives you a real sense of what early Christian Ireland actually looked like.

Birr Castle, also in County Offaly, is a completely different experience - home to the Parsons family since the 17th century, it combines medieval and Victorian architecture with beautifully landscaped grounds. But the real draw is the Birr Telescope, known as the Leviathan of Parsonstown. Built in the 1840s by the Third Earl of Rosse, its 72-inch metal mirror made it the largest telescope in the world for over 70 years. Astronomers used it to observe distant galaxies and nebulae in detail that hadn’t been possible before. The restored telescope still stands on the grounds, and the castle’s gardens are equally worth exploring, with exotic plants and scenic walks.

Your private, air-conditioned vehicle picks you up at your hotel at 8am and has you back by 6pm - 10 hours with a fully-qualified English-speaking guide who runs the day entirely at your pace. Admission fees to both sites are separate, but your guide can arrange tickets with concierge queue-skip service if you’d like that handled in advance.

Local Tips

Clonmacnoise is one of those places that can feel very different depending on the weather. On a clear morning the Shannon stretching out beside the ruins is genuinely beautiful. On a misty day it has an entirely different and equally compelling atmosphere. Either way, wear layers - it’s an open site and the wind off the river can surprise you.

The original high crosses at Clonmacnoise are housed inside the visitor centre to protect them from the elements. What you see outside are replicas, but detailed and well positioned. The originals inside are worth spending time with - the carving work is extraordinary for the period, and the centre does a good job of putting them in context.

Birr town itself is a pleasant and underrated midlands market town. If you have time during the day, the main street has some good cafes and the town’s Georgian streetscape is attractive. Ask your guide for a lunch recommendation - there are decent options within easy walking distance of the castle.

The Birr Castle gardens are among the finest in Ireland, with over 1,000 species of trees and shrubs from around the world. The Box Hedge maze, reportedly the tallest in the world, and the formal garden areas are worth taking time over beyond the telescope itself. If botany is your thing, this is a genuinely serious garden.

Admission to both Clonmacnoise and Birr Castle is not included in the tour price, so it’s worth budgeting for those separately. Ask about queue-skip concierge service when you book if you’d prefer to have everything arranged in advance.
