Castlewellan: Canadian Canoe & Chill

About This Tour

Castlewellan Lake is one of those places that feels like it was designed for a day on the water. Sheltered by the forest park and framed by the Mourne Mountains, it’s calm, scenic and genuinely peaceful - the kind of setting that makes you want to slow right down and just be somewhere for a while. A Canadian canoe is the perfect way to do exactly that.

The team at the lakeside centre handles everything before you get near the water. After a quick introduction to paddling technique, you’re fitted out with a canoe, wetsuit, buoyancy aid, paddle and all the accessories you need. You can go solo, paddle as a pair, or pile the whole family into one boat - the choice is yours. Stay in the sheltered Castle Bay for a relaxed session, or follow the Lake Trail for a proper paddle through some of the most beautiful scenery in Northern Ireland.

What makes this experience work so well is how accessible it is. Complete beginners feel comfortable within minutes, children love it, and even experienced paddlers tend to appreciate the quality of the equipment and the beauty of the setting. When you’re done on the water, warm showers and changing rooms are waiting at the centre so you can head off without feeling like a soggy tourist.

Local Tips

The family canoe option is one of the best things you can do in Northern Ireland with kids. The open boat means everyone’s together rather than each in their own craft, which makes the whole thing more sociable and a lot more fun. Children who are initially nervous tend to relax quickly once they realise how stable the boats are on this sheltered stretch of water.

Take the Lake Trail if conditions allow. Castle Bay is lovely, but the Lake Trail opens up views of the Mourne Mountains that are worth the extra paddling. It’s not a demanding route, and the change in scenery as you move further along the lake is genuinely rewarding. Ask the team at the centre what the conditions are like on the day.

Castlewellan Forest Park is one of Northern Ireland’s hidden gems. The arboretum within the park is among the finest in Ireland, and the walled garden and castle grounds are beautiful to walk around. Building in some time before or after your canoeing session to explore the park is absolutely worth it.

Don’t overthink the paddling. The introduction covers everything you need, and Canadian canoes are considerably more stable than they look. The most common mistake is gripping the paddle too tightly - once you relax into it, the technique comes naturally and you can start paying attention to where you are rather than what your arms are doing.

Pair this with the SUP experience if your group wants more variety on the water. Both are based at the same lakeside centre, and switching between a canoe and a paddleboard gives you two very different ways to experience the same gorgeous lake.
