Howth: Paddleboarding Lesson in Howth Harbour

About This Tour

Howth Harbour is one of the nicest places in Ireland to get on a paddleboard for the first time. The water inside the harbour is calm, the view is genuinely lovely, and you’ve got seals and seabirds for company - which makes it a much more appealing learning environment than a swimming pool or an exposed beach.

Your instructor is BSUPA-ASI qualified and the lesson runs for two hours, which gives you time to actually get comfortable rather than just wobbling around for a bit and calling it done. You start on land with an introduction to how weather and conditions affect paddleboarding, and learn how to carry and handle the board before you get anywhere near the water. Once you’re out on the harbour, you’ll work through paddling technique, different types of turns, and - just as important - how to fall safely and perform a self-rescue if you end up in the water. The session also covers the basics of expedition planning and surfing stance, so you’re leaving with a proper foundation rather than just a morning’s entertainment.

The harbour setting makes the whole thing feel worthwhile from the first paddle stroke. You’re out on the sea without being far from shore, the scenery changes as you move around, and if you’re lucky a seal will pop up a few metres away to see what you’re up to.

Local Tips

Assume you’re getting wet and dress for it. Even if you’ve got great balance, falling in at some point is part of the lesson - the instructor covers safe falling deliberately, so it’s expected rather than a disaster. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting soaked, and if you have a change of clothes stashed in a bag on the pier, you’ll be much more comfortable afterwards.

The DART makes Howth easy to reach from Dublin city. Howth is the last stop on the northbound DART line from Connolly and Pearse stations - about 30 minutes and no need to worry about parking. After the lesson you’re right in the middle of one of Dublin’s most enjoyable coastal villages.

Howth is a brilliant day out beyond the paddleboarding itself. The cliff walk, the pier, the fish and chips, the weekend market, the castle and gardens - there’s enough here to fill a full day if you want to make it a proper outing. Do the paddleboarding first while you’ve got the energy, then explore at your own pace afterwards.

Seals around the harbour are common enough that they’re a real possibility rather than a lucky bonus. They’re used to boats and people in the water and tend to keep a polite distance, but if one surfaces near you, just keep paddling calmly and enjoy it.

Wind matters more than you’d think. The instructor will brief you on conditions before you head out, but it’s worth knowing that even a light offshore breeze feels different when you’re standing on a board. Trust the briefing, follow the guidance, and don’t worry about it - the harbour is a sheltered spot by design.
