Irish Traditional Pub and History Tour with Expert Local Guide

About This Tour

If you want to understand Dublin, spend time in its pubs. They’re where the city’s literary history was argued over, where the Irish language was kept alive between friends, and where music found its way into the blood of every generation. This private 4-hour tour puts you inside three of the best, with a guide who knows the stories behind every pint pulled.

You’ll visit three pubs across the evening, each with its own personality and history. At the first, you’ll try some traditional Irish food and get a feel for how these places work as community anchors, not just drinking spots. The second is a beautifully kept Victorian bar - the kind where Guinness is treated as a craft, not an afterthought. At the third, your guide tells the story of Irish whiskey: how it was invented, how it was nearly lost, and how it found its way back onto bars around the world. Not a whiskey drinker? No problem - there’s plenty more on the menu.

Live music weaves through the whole evening. Dublin’s best pubs have always had it, and once you’ve heard it in the right setting it’s hard to forget. Your guide connects all of this - the drink, the music, the literary connections, the drinking traditions passed down through generations - into something that feels like a proper Dublin night rather than a scheduled tour. This tour has been a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice winner from 2020 to 2024.

If you’re bringing children, Irish law requires under-18s to leave pubs by 8.30pm.

Local Tips

Book the tour for your first night in Dublin if you can. The evening sets you up with a mental map of how the city works - where the neighbourhoods are, what the pace feels like, which places are worth coming back to on your own. You’ll leave with a shortlist.

Ask your guide for their personal pub pick. The itinerary covers three great spots, but your guide has opinions on the rest of the city too. The best recommendations are always the ones that don’t make it onto any official list.

Don’t rush the Guinness. A proper pint takes around 119.5 seconds to pour - two stages, a rest in between. If a bar rushes it, that tells you something. Your guide will make sure you’re somewhere that gets it right.

The live music isn’t always on a stage. Traditional sessions in Dublin often happen at the corner of the bar, a few musicians sitting together playing for the love of it. If you see one starting up, hold off on the conversation for a few minutes and just listen.

Eat something before you arrive. The food stop is part of the experience, but a full evening of three pubs lands better on a base. A light bite beforehand means you’ll pace yourself comfortably and enjoy every stop.
