Once your driver drops you in Kilkenny, the whole town hands you an itinerary whether you ask for one or not. The Medieval Mile - Kilkenny Castle at one end, St Canice’s Cathedral at the other - is a kilometre and a half of limestone lanes you can walk in either direction and stop wherever you like. The round tower at the cathedral is 9th-century and climbable (100 steps; not for anyone with a bad hip), and the view from the top makes the effort worthwhile.
For lunch after you land, Foodworks on Parliament Street does sourdough, eggs done right, and a brunch that will take the edge off any early flight. If you’re arriving in the evening, Campagne at the Gas House Lane end of town is the room locals book for a birthday - French technique, Irish ingredients, book ahead for a Saturday.
Park your car at MacDonagh Junction or the Market Yard rather than trying to navigate the medieval streets. The whole town is fifteen minutes end to end on foot once you’re in.
The Kilkenny Castle parkland is free to walk and sits fifty acres in the middle of the city - useful if you want fresh air after a long journey before committing to a restaurant. The 2 km loop through the formal garden, down to the River Nore and back up through the rose garden takes forty minutes at an easy pace.
