Local Tips

Limerick sits where the River Shannon widens out. The riverside walk along the Hunt Museum and King John’s Castle is one of the better city walks in Ireland - you get the medieval walls on one side and the Shannon on the other, and the views across to County Clare are lovely on a clear day. King John’s Castle is genuinely worth going inside rather than just photographing from the bridge.

The Hunt Museum is a hidden gem. It holds one of the finest private art collections in Ireland - works by Picasso, Renoir, and Jack B. Yeats, among others, in a Georgian mansion on Rutland Street. Admission is affordable and the building itself is beautiful. It tends to be quiet even when the city is busy.

Thomond Park matters here. Limerick is Munster rugby territory, and Thomond Park is one of the most atmospheric sports grounds in the country. If there’s a match on during your stay, it’s worth making the effort to go - the pre-match atmosphere in the local pubs around Thomondgate is part of the experience.

The Treaty City has a proper food scene now. Limerick’s restaurant and cafe culture has grown considerably in recent years. Canteen on Catherine Street is a local favourite for lunch, and the Milk Market on Saturday morning is the best place in the city to eat well and spend very little.
