Your chauffeur meets you at the arrivals terminal at Dublin Airport or at your Dublin City location and takes you west to Knock Shrine in Co. Mayo in a private, air-conditioned vehicle. It’s a 2 to 3 hour journey, and having a dedicated driver means you can focus on the visit ahead rather than motorway navigation. All fees and taxes are included.
The same transfer is available for the return journey to Dublin City or Dublin Airport. Let the operator know your preferred pick-up location at Knock when booking.
Knock Shrine is one of Ireland’s most important Marian pilgrimage sites. The apparition reported here in August 1879 drew increasing numbers of pilgrims over the following century, and the site now receives around 1.5 million visitors a year. The original Apparition Chapel, built around the gable wall where the apparition occurred, is at the heart of the complex and is open throughout the day.
The basilica is a large modern building completed in 1976. It holds 20,000 people and was consecrated by Pope John Paul II when he visited in 1979 on the centenary of the apparition. The scale of it is something to see, even for visitors who aren’t coming on a religious basis. There’s a strong architectural contrast between the old church and the new basilica that’s worth noting as you walk around.
The Folk Museum on site is genuinely good. Run by the Knock Shrine authorities, it covers the history of the apparition and the development of the pilgrimage, but also the wider social history of rural Mayo in the 19th century. It’s small enough to move through in an hour and well worth the time.
Claremorris and Castlebar are both within 20 minutes. If you need somewhere to eat, stay overnight, or pick up supplies before or after your visit, Claremorris to the south and Castlebar to the west are the nearest towns with a reasonable range of options. Westport, about 45 minutes from Knock, is a particularly good base if you’re spending a few days in the region - it’s one of the more liveable and visitor-friendly towns in Connacht.
