Local Tips

Sligo is Yeats country in the most literal sense, and the landscape he wrote about is still recognisably the same. Benbulben - the flat-topped mountain that looms over the north of the county - is visible from much of the town and surrounding area. Yeats is buried in Drumcliff churchyard just below it, which is a short drive north of Sligo town and worth stopping at even if you’re not a poetry reader.

Sligo town itself has a good independent food scene for a place of its size. Lyons Cafe on Quay Street has been a reliable local favourite for years and is a good first-morning option. The town has a compact centre that’s easy to walk, with the river running through it and several good pubs if you want a quiet evening after travel.

Strandhill is about 8 kilometres from the town centre and has one of the best surf beaches in Connacht. Even if you’re not surfing, the beach walk at low tide and the views back to Knocknarea mountain are well worth the short drive. Shells Cafe at Strandhill does excellent food and is popular with both locals and visitors.

Lough Gill southeast of the town is where you’ll find the Lake Isle of Innisfree that Yeats wrote about. You can see it from the shore road, or take one of the small boat tours that run on the lake in summer. The drive around the lake through Dromahair is a good quiet option if you have an afternoon free.
