Local Tips

Nenagh is the county town of North Tipperary, sitting on the edge of the fertile Golden Vale farmland with Lough Derg visible to the west on clear days. The town has a striking Norman castle keep - one of the best-preserved circular keeps in Ireland - that stands right in the town centre and is hard to miss as you come in from the Dublin road. The Nenagh Heritage Centre nearby covers the full history of the region if you want context.

The route west from Dublin follows the M7 through Kildare and Tipperary. The motorway carries you through the wide midlands plain before Roscrea signals the start of proper Tipperary country. The last stretch into Nenagh drops through gently rolling farmland with the Arra Mountains rising to the south and Lough Derg beginning to appear in the distance. Two hours goes quickly when the landscape does the work.

Lough Derg is the real draw for the area around Nenagh. The lake forms the border between Tipperary and Clare along much of its length and is the largest of the three lakes on the Shannon system. Dromineer, a small harbour village about ten kilometres from Nenagh on the Lough Derg shore, is a good spot for an evening walk along the water. The lake is popular for sailing, fishing, and cruising, and several hire companies operate on the Shannon nearby.

North Tipperary is excellent cycling territory. The Lough Derg Blueway trail runs along the eastern shore of the lake and connects several small villages. The Holy Island in Lough Derg - accessible by boat from Mountshannon on the Clare side - has the remains of a monastery dating to the 7th century. If you’re planning to explore the area by car from Nenagh, the R494 road along the lakeshore toward Portroe gives some of the best water views in the region.
