Local Tips

Kinsale is about three hours south of Dublin by road, sitting at the mouth of the Bandon River where it meets the sea. The route down takes you through the Midlands and into Cork via the M8 motorway - a smooth, easy drive that your driver will have well covered. You’ll start to notice the Cork landscape changing as you drop down through the hills south of the city.

Kinsale has a well-earned reputation as one of Ireland’s best towns for food. The harbour is still an active fishing port and the restaurants along the waterfront take that seriously - fresh fish, local shellfish, and a dining scene that punches well above the town’s size. If you’re arriving in the evening, the Good Food Circle restaurants are a reliable guide for where to eat first.

The town itself is compact and very walkable, with narrow streets, brightly painted houses, and two 17th-century forts guarding the harbour entrance. Charles Fort on the east bank is the more impressive of the two and warrants a couple of hours if the weather is decent. The harbour walk between the two forts is one of the best short walks in Cork.

Getting around Kinsale without a car is fine within the town, but some of the surrounding attractions - the Old Head of Kinsale headland, Timoleague Abbey, or the Seven Heads Peninsula - are easier to reach by taxi or with a rental car. Worth thinking about before you arrive if you’re planning day trips.

  • Old Head of Kinsale - A dramatic headland jutting into the Atlantic, with cliff walks, a lighthouse, and views that stretch far down the Cork coast.
  • Timoleague - A small estuary village west of Kinsale with a striking ruined Franciscan friary right on the waterside and good birdwatching on the mudflats.
