Local Tips

Ballyliffin sits on the Inishowen Peninsula in County Donegal, one of the quieter and less-visited corners of Ireland’s northwest. It’s known for its golf - the Ballyliffin Golf Club has two links courses that regularly draw serious players from across Ireland and further afield - but the surrounding countryside and coastline are reason enough to visit even if you don’t play.

The drive north is one of the most gradual and rewarding landscape shifts in Ireland. The motorway carries you efficiently out of Dublin, and once you’re past County Louth and into Donegal, the sky gets bigger, the roads get quieter, and the whole pace of things noticeably changes. It’s worth being awake for the last hour.

Pollan Bay is just a short drive from Ballyliffin, and it’s the kind of beach that stops people in their tracks - wide, wild, and usually almost empty even in summer. Worth building into your first full day if the weather cooperates.

Malin Head, Ireland’s most northerly point, is about 20 km from Ballyliffin. The drive out there along the Inishowen 100 coastal route is excellent, and the headland itself has a rugged, edge-of-the-world quality that photographs well but feels even better in person.

Donegal is one of the counties where a car is genuinely useful once you’re there. If you’re planning to explore beyond Ballyliffin, check whether your accommodation can point you toward local car hire, or consider extending your transfer arrangement with the operator.
