Local Tips

Dungloe is in the heart of the Rosses, the Irish-speaking coastal area of west Donegal that stretches south from Gweedore. If you haven’t been to this part of Ireland before, the landscape is going to be different from anything else on the island - bogs, lakelets, rocky headlands, and light that changes every few minutes depending on the cloud cover.

The drive from Dublin to Dungloe takes roughly 4 hours under normal conditions, heading north through Sligo and then west along the Donegal coast. The last hour through Donegal is genuinely rewarding scenery-wise, so it’s worth staying alert as you get closer rather than snoozing through it.

The Rosses is a strong Gaeltacht area, meaning Irish is widely spoken as a first language here. Most people are equally comfortable in English, but if you pick up even a few words of Irish before you go, it tends to be warmly received in local shops and pubs.

Dungloe is the main service town for the Rosses, so if you’re staying in a more remote part of the area, stock up on anything you need when you arrive. It has a good range of shops, a few solid pubs, and makes a practical base for exploring the surrounding coast and islands.

If you’re planning to visit Arranmore Island during your stay, the ferry runs from Burtonport, which is about 10km from Dungloe. It’s a short crossing and the island is well worth a half-day - bring good shoes and no particular plan.
