Discover Dublin Full-day City Tour

About This Tour

A full 10 hours gives you the room to actually take Dublin in rather than rush through it. This private tour covers the city’s most significant historical sites - Trinity College, Dublin Castle, and St. Patrick’s Cathedral - with a proper midday break for lunch at The Fumbally, a café known locally for its fresh, locally sourced food. You’ll also see Kilmainham Gaol from the outside, where the story of Ireland’s fight for independence is written into the walls. A professional guide and private air-conditioned vehicle are with you for the entire day.

Itinerary

  1. Trinity College Dublin - Founded in 1592, Ireland’s oldest university is home to the famous Long Room Library and the Book of Kells, a beautifully illuminated medieval manuscript. (120 min)

  2. Dublin Castle - A symbol of Ireland’s complex past, from its medieval foundations through centuries of British rule to the moment Michael Collins accepted the handover in 1922. You’ll tour the castle and its gardens and hear about its significance. (120 min)

  3. St. Patrick’s Cathedral - Founded in 1191, Ireland’s largest cathedral and a genuine piece of Gothic architecture. Jonathan Swift served as Dean here for 32 years, and his tomb and belongings are preserved inside. (60 min)

  4. Kilmainham Gaol - A former prison with a striking stone facade that housed many of Ireland’s political prisoners and played a central role in the struggle for independence. This stop is an exterior visit only. (30 min)

Local Tips

The Fumbally is a proper local lunch spot, not a tourist café. It’s in the Liberties neighbourhood, which is one of Dublin’s oldest areas, and the food reflects the kind of simple, honest cooking that’s made it a favourite with people who actually live nearby. Go with whatever’s on the board that day rather than looking for a set menu - that’s how it works there.

If you want to make the most of Trinity College, ask your guide about the Long Room in the Old Library before you go in. The room itself is stunning - a barrel-vaulted ceiling over nearly 200,000 of the library’s oldest books - but knowing a little of the story in advance helps you appreciate what you’re looking at rather than just photographing it.

At Dublin Castle, pay attention to the Chester Beatty Library in the grounds - it houses one of the most significant collections of manuscripts and rare books in the world and is free to enter. It’s not always mentioned on the standard visit but it rewards a look if you have time to spare.

Kilmainham Gaol is worth a proper interior visit on a separate trip if you find the exterior makes you curious. The jail tour takes you through the cells where leaders of the 1916 Rising spent their final days - it’s one of the most affecting historical experiences in the city. It requires booking ahead, so plan if you’re interested.

On a 10-hour private day, you have more flexibility than you might think. If something catches your attention or you want more time at one stop, your guide can adjust. That’s the whole point of going private.
