Local Tips

Ballybofey sits in the Finn Valley in County Donegal, right on the border with County Tyrone. The road from Dublin takes you up through some beautiful midland countryside before the landscape opens out into the hills of Donegal - it’s a genuinely scenic drive, and having a private transfer means you can take it in without navigating or worrying about rest stops.

The Villa Rose Hotel is one of the better-known hotels in this part of Donegal, well placed for accessing the wider county. If you’re heading further north or west to Glenveagh National Park, the Donegal coast, or the Slieve League cliffs, Ballybofey is a reasonable base for a night or two.

Donegal is Irish-speaking country in places, and the landscape and culture shift noticeably the further north you go. The Finn Valley area has its own character - quieter and less tourist-focused than some other parts of the county.

Plan for around 2.5 to 3 hours travel time from Dublin, depending on conditions. The route takes you up through the midlands and then north into Donegal, and the final stretch through the valley is the most distinctive part of the journey.
