Local Tips

The Shandon Hotel and Spa is in Dunfanaghy, County Donegal, on the northern Atlantic coast. The drive from Dublin takes roughly 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic, heading north through Monaghan or Sligo and up into Donegal. The landscape changes significantly as you move north - the midlands give way to drumlin country and then to the dramatic coastline and mountains of Donegal proper.

Dunfanaghy sits at the edge of the Wild Atlantic Way and the views around it - Horn Head, Marble Hill Beach, the Ards Forest Park - are some of the most striking in Ireland. The town itself is small and quiet, with a handful of good restaurants and shops, and a slow pace that takes a little getting used to if you’re coming straight from a long-haul flight.

Horn Head is a sea cliff headland with one of the most dramatic coastal walks in Donegal. It’s about a 10-kilometre loop from Dunfanaghy, with views back across Sheephaven Bay and north towards the open Atlantic. Your chauffeur can point you in the right direction if you’re planning to explore on foot.

Marble Hill Beach is a short drive from the hotel and is one of the nicest beaches in Donegal for swimming - sheltered enough in the right conditions, with clean water and a satisfyingly remote feel. Pack for it even in summer, as Atlantic weather can change quickly.

If you’ve got time before or after your stay, the Glenveagh National Park and Castle in the Derryveagh Mountains is worth a visit. It’s around 40 minutes from Dunfanaghy and covers 16,000 hectares of mountain and lake landscape. The castle itself was built in 1870 and the gardens are particularly well maintained.
