Local Tips

Athlone sits almost exactly in the centre of Ireland, which makes it a genuinely good base if you’re planning to explore in multiple directions. Connemara is to the west, the Shannon waterway runs right through town, and Clonmacnoise - one of Ireland’s most important early Christian monastic sites - is only about 20 minutes south by car.

The drive from Dublin follows the M6 motorway through flat, open midlands countryside. It’s not the most dramatic scenery in Ireland, but on a clear day you start to see the bog landscape open up and the sky gets big and wide in a way that’s quietly striking.

Athlone Castle sits right at the centre of town on the banks of the River Shannon. It dates to 1210, and the museum inside covers everything from the Siege of Athlone in 1691 to the life of John McCormack, the operatic tenor who was one of Ireland’s most famous voices in the early 20th century.

Sean’s Bar on the west bank of the Shannon claims to be the oldest pub in Ireland, with records going back to 900 AD. Whether or not the history is airtight, it’s a proper local pub and worth a visit once you’ve settled in.
