Local Tips

Ballyvolane House is a Georgian country house in north Cork, near the village of Castlelyons between Fermoy and Midleton. The drive from Dublin takes about two hours, mostly south on the M8 through Tipperary before crossing into Cork. It’s a straightforward run, and the landscape shifts nicely from the Tipperary plain into the green Cork countryside on the final stretch.

Ballyvolane is a proper working Irish country house - it’s been in the Green family for generations, and that comes through in how it feels. The fishing on the Blackwater is one of the main draws. The Blackwater is one of Ireland’s best salmon rivers, and guests can arrange days on the water directly through the house. Even if fishing isn’t your thing, the gardens and grounds are extensive and well worth a wander.

Fermoy is the nearest town, about 10 minutes from the house, and has a reasonable range of cafes, shops, and a good riverside walk along the Blackwater. Cork city is about 30 minutes south and has everything you’d expect from a proper city - good food, music, galleries, and the English Market, which is worth visiting even if you’re not buying anything.

The Blackwater Valley is one of Cork’s quieter corners and doesn’t get the crowds that the coast does, which is part of its appeal. Lismore Castle and its gardens are about 20 minutes east over the border into Waterford - the gardens alone are worth the short trip. If you’re a whiskey drinker, the Midleton distillery (home of Jameson) is about 30 minutes south, and they do good tours that include the heritage distillery as well as the working one.
