Local Tips

Kilshane House is in County Tipperary, about two hours south of Dublin on the M8. The motorway takes you through the Midlands and into Tipperary’s flat agricultural heartland before the landscape rises gently toward the Galtee Mountains to the south. It’s a smooth, easy run that most drivers cover without a break.

Kilshane House is a Georgian country house used primarily as a private events and wedding venue. If you’re arriving for a celebration, the grounds include formal gardens and the house sits in its own parkland - give yourself time to walk around once you’ve settled in rather than heading straight indoors.

Tipperary is well positioned for reaching several major sites. Cashel, with the famous Rock and its cluster of medieval buildings on a limestone outcrop, is only about 20 minutes from Kilshane. The town of Cahir, with its well-preserved riverside castle, is similar distance in another direction. Both are worth working into your itinerary if you have time.

The Galtee Mountains form the backdrop to the south and offer good hill walking from several starting points - Galtymore, the highest peak in the range at 919 metres, can be reached from the Glen of Aherlow on a clear day. The Glen itself is a scenic valley popular for cycling and walking, about 30 minutes from Kilshane.

  • Rock of Cashel - A cluster of medieval buildings on a dramatic limestone rock, including a 12th-century round tower, cathedral, and Cormac’s Chapel with its Romanesque carvings.
  • Cahir Castle - One of the largest and best-preserved medieval castles in Ireland, sitting on an island in the River Suir in the centre of Cahir town.
  • Glen of Aherlow - A quiet valley below the Galtee Mountains with walking trails, forest paths, and good views back toward the Tipperary plain.
